We aim to engage with young people who have a key stake in the success of the climate campaign. If you are interested in promoting events for young people and establishing educational links across the Moorlands, this is the group for you.

We will be setting up a diary of events for 2020 to promote, local, national and international climate action, building community links to engage positively with young
people. If you have ideas and/or contact with schools and youth groups across the Staffordshire Moorlands, we would love to hear from you.

  • Adults, students and young people of all ages, from towns, and rural areas in the Staffordshire Moorlands.
  • United by concern for the future of our planet.
  • Demanding that our local government takes our future seriously and treats climate change as what it has declared: an emergency.

  • That the voices of our youth be taken seriously by power-holders in the Staffordshire Moorlands.
  • That safe and sustainable travel options are made easily available to young people in the Staffordshire Moorlands.
  • That young people are able to protest openly and safely around issues regarding our climate and environment.

Youth Engagement in the Staffordshire Moorlands

Inspired by Greta Thunberg and the Fridays for Future global movement, our youth engagement project focuses on harnessing the strength and unity of the youth movement, compelling us to listen to the science and to take affirmative action to safeguard our world, to tune into nature and to nurture the Earth as she nurtures us. It is evident that the pandemic and the climate crisis are inextricably linked and that “business as usual” and a return to “normal” is neither desirable nor possible. We understand that we should treat the climate crisis with the same resolve and purpose as for the Covid 19 pandemic if we are to provide a better world for our children.

It is, with this in mind, that we aim to provide opportunities drawing on science and the arts empowering and supporting young people to take action, forming partnerships with local community groups and building educational resources to enhance learning and provide the tools to deal with the climate crisis, to build a brighter future and better world.

What We Are Up To...

  • We are talking to Staffordshire County Youth and Voluntary Services to forge links via SCVYS with Westwood College, Endon, Biddulph and Cheadle High schools. If you are from any of these schools – we’d love to hear from you!
  • We are developing a clothing sustainability project in partnership with Fashion Revolution for Severn Trent’s 2020 community grants.
  • We are currently working on our safeguarding and data protection policy in order to keep any children who would like to get involved with MCA safe. If you have any experience in writing these types of documents we would love to hear from you.

Future Activities (After lockdown restrictions have lifted)

We wish to hold a poetry and arts competition for young people themed around the environment. Entries will be advertised in the Leek Post and Times and on Moorlands Radio.

To celebrate MCA’s one-year anniversary, we want to hold another protest outside Staffordshire Moorlands District Council’s offices.

Our Priorities for 2021

  • Developing activity packs for children and teachers / parents
  • Engaging and working with local schools with their eco/environmental projects / delivering climate literacy lessons
